A Lasting Legacy: Remembering Dr. Peter A. Wollitzer

It has been almost 10 years since UCEAP lost good friend and cherished colleague Dr. Peter A. Wollitzer.  During his junior year at UCSB, Peter demonstrated his pioneering spirit and passion for study abroad by participating in UCEAP’s program in Bordeaux, France.  Prior to joining UCEAP as a staff member, Peter was the Assistant Director of UC Berkeley’s Institute of International Studies. From 1986 to 2006, Peter served as a UCEAP Regional Director of programs in Asia and Africa and was also responsible for programs in Germany, Costa Rica, Italy and Hungary over the years.  In addition to his 20 year tenure at UCEAP, Peter served on a wide range of international task forces and boards. Since 2007, the Forum on Education Abroad has honored seven individuals with the Peter A. Wollitzer Advocacy Award and each year CIEE recognizes high achieving students with the Wollitzer Merit Scholarship.

Peter was the first individual recognized by the UCEAP Memorial Scholarship Fund, an endowment fund created to allow alumni, staff, faculty and friends of UCEAP to have a lasting impact on our students and programs.  Contributions to this growing endowment provide scholarships to high performing students participating in UCEAP study abroad programs with demonstrated financial need.  UCEAP is excited to introduce you to the 2014-15 recipient of the UCEAP Memorial Scholarship Fund award in memory of Peter Wollitzer, Varanon Austin Pukasamsombut.  Varanon studied in Japan at Tohoku University. In recognition of the 10 year anniversary of his passing, UCEAP and Peter's widow Alison, are honored to launch a new fundraising effort in his memory.  Every gift to the UCEAP Memorial Scholarship Fund will help ensure a lasting legacy for Peter and the Wollitzer family.  Donations of any amount can change the life of a UC student!  Click here to learn more about the fund, or donate online today.  For more information about this fund, contact Elizabeth Janis Perl at eperl@eap.ucop.edu.
